Atlético Madrid came from behind and then weathered Morten Hjulmand’s dismissal to secure a 1–1 draw with VfB Stuttgart at the MHPArena on Tuesday in the UEFA Champions League league phase.

Jamie Leweling put Stuttgart ahead in the 36th minute, but Julián Álvarez equalised in the 47th. Hjulmand’s red card in the 64th minute gave the hosts a numerical advantage for the remainder of the fixture, yet they could not find a winner.

Leweling gives Stuttgart the half-time advantage

Stuttgart’s breakthrough arrived nine minutes before the interval, with Leweling finding the net in the 36th minute to establish a 1–0 lead. It was an advantage the home side carried into the dressing room, leaving Atlético needing a response after the restart.

The hosts finished the evening with the stronger attacking numbers: 18 attempts to Atlético’s 10, five shots on target to three and nine corners to four. Their 54.1 per cent share of possession also underlined their greater share of the ball, although those full-match figures ultimately brought only one goal.

Álvarez responds before Hjulmand sees red

Atlético wasted little time restoring parity. Álvarez struck in the 47th minute, cancelling out Leweling’s opener and changing the complexion of the second half almost immediately.

The next major turning point came in the 64th minute when Hjulmand was shown a red card. With the visitors reduced to 10 men, Stuttgart had more than 25 minutes of regulation time to turn their numerical advantage into a decisive goal.

That goal never arrived. Atlético kept the hosts from adding to their tally through the remainder of the second half and four minutes of stoppage time, securing a point despite their dismissal.

A point apiece, with different perspectives

For Stuttgart, the draw brought the frustration of surrendering a half-time lead and being unable to make the extra player count. Their advantages in possession, attempts and corners showed the opportunity was there, but not the finishing touch needed to take all three points.

Atlético, meanwhile, left Germany with a valuable away point after recovering from a deficit and negotiating the closing stages short-handed. Álvarez’s early second-half intervention proved decisive in ensuring the visitors had something to protect.
