Liverpool came from two goals down to beat Villarreal 4–3 in a seven-goal UEFA Champions League thriller at Anfield on Tuesday, October 20. Alexis Mac Allister’s goals in the 36th and 65th minutes powered the turnaround, although the visitors ensured the closing stages were anything but comfortable.

Villarreal strike twice before Liverpool respond
Villarreal made an immediate impression, with Georges Mikautadze opening the scoring after just four minutes. Sergi Cardona doubled their advantage in the 29th minute, leaving Liverpool facing a substantial test before the interval.
The hosts found their route back through Mac Allister, whose 36th-minute header reduced the deficit. That breakthrough changed the complexion of the half, and Ronald Araújo then headed Liverpool level in the second minute of first-half stoppage time, making it 2–2 at the break.

From a position of real danger, Liverpool had restored parity before either side could regroup. Villarreal’s excellent start had been undone by two headed goals in the closing stretch of the opening half.
Three-minute burst completes the turnaround
Mac Allister put Liverpool ahead for the first time in the 65th minute, adding his second goal of the evening. Three minutes later, substitute Florian Wirtz struck in the 68th minute to establish a 4–2 lead and complete a sequence of four unanswered Liverpool goals.

The hosts’ attacking output underlined their threat. Liverpool finished with 22 attempts to Villarreal’s 14, seven shots on target to five, and eight corners to the visitors’ two. Possession was more evenly balanced, with Liverpool holding 52.6 percent.
Late volley keeps the contest alive
Villarreal refused to let the fixture drift away. Substitute Tani Oluwaseyi’s 87th-minute volley cut the deficit to one, putting a draw back within reach and setting up a tense finish.
Liverpool held on, however, securing three league-phase points from a contest that showcased both their attacking resilience and their defensive vulnerability. Recovering from 2–0 down offered plenty to celebrate; conceding three goals ensured there was also plenty to examine.
For Villarreal, the frustration was clear: an early two-goal advantage and a late revival ultimately brought no reward. For Liverpool, a dramatic European night ended with a hard-earned victory.
