Guus Til made the difference at the Estádio do Dragão on Tuesday, scoring in the 57th minute to give PSV Eindhoven a 1–0 victory over FC Porto in the UEFA Champions League league phase.

A goalless first half left the fixture finely balanced, but Til supplied the only breakthrough after the interval. Porto could not find an equaliser, leaving the Dutch visitors to depart Portugal with three points and a clean sheet.

Til breaks the deadlock

Neither side found the net before half-time, with PSV defender Lutsharel Geertruida receiving a yellow card in the 39th minute. The decisive moment arrived 12 minutes into the second half, when Til put the visitors ahead.

That 57th-minute goal proved enough. PSV subsequently saw Mauro Júnior booked in the 75th minute, but there was no further change to the result before the final whistle after five minutes of second-half stoppage time.

PSV control possession, Porto lack the finishing touch

PSV enjoyed 59.6% possession and attempted 18 shots to Porto’s 14, giving the visitors the edge in both time on the ball and overall shooting volume. They also won three corners to the hosts’ two.

Porto nevertheless registered four shots on target, one more than PSV’s three. Those figures underline the narrow margins: the hosts tested the target more often, but it was Til’s contribution that separated the teams.

A valuable away victory

For PSV, this was a productive European away night built around the match’s solitary goal and a clean sheet. Porto were left with the frustration of creating shooting opportunities without turning any into an equaliser.

In a contest decided by one moment, Guus Til’s 57th-minute winner was the telling contribution.
