San Diego Wave FC delivered a composed and clinical performance on Saturday, July 4, beating Gotham FC 2-0 at Snapdragon Stadium in National Women’s Soccer League action.
The hosts found their breakthrough at exactly the right moment, with Melanie Barcenas in the 45th minute giving San Diego a deserved lead just before the interval. It was the kind of goal that shifted the tone of the night, rewarding Wave pressure and forcing Gotham to chase the fixture in the second half.
Gotham saw plenty of the ball and finished with a slight edge in possession at 51.7 percent, while also winning six corners to San Diego’s none. But despite matching the Wave with 15 total shots, the visitors could not turn territory into a goal. San Diego were sharper in the decisive moments, putting eight efforts on target compared to Gotham’s four and looking more dangerous whenever the final pass opened up space.
The second half had its share of bite as the intensity rose. Emily Sonnett went into the referee’s book for Gotham in the 62nd minute, and Kenza Dali was cautioned for San Diego in the 72nd. Even with Gotham pushing for an equaliser, the Wave back line held firm and protected the clean sheet with discipline.
As the visitors committed numbers forward late on, San Diego found the insurance goal in stoppage time. Trinity Byars struck in the 90+3rd minute to put the result beyond doubt, sending the home crowd of 10,592 into celebration and wrapping up an impressive night for the Wave.
At halftime, San Diego led 1-0, and they matched that with one more goal after the break to complete a 2-0 victory. The result lifts the Wave to a 9-1-4 record, while Gotham FC drop to 6-3-3.
For San Diego, this was a mature display built on efficiency in both penalty areas. For Gotham, the underlying numbers offered some encouragement, but the lack of cutting edge ultimately proved costly. In a fixture between two competitive sides, the Wave were simply more ruthless when the big moments arrived.
