Portland Thorns FC 1-1 Chicago Stars FC finished level at Providence Park on Sunday, with Taylor Wood’s 90+2nd-minute header rescuing a dramatic National Women’s Soccer League point for the visitors.
Portland appeared set to see out a narrow home victory after taking the lead in the 22nd minute. Chicago defender Maitane turned the ball into her own net, handing the Thorns a 1-0 advantage and giving the hosts control of the first half.
The Thorns carried the greater share of possession, finishing with 56.2 percent, and put sustained pressure on Chicago’s back line. Portland produced 22 shots, six on target and eight corners, while Chicago had nine attempts and four on target. But despite the hosts’ territorial edge, the Stars remained firmly in the contest.
Chicago’s resilience was rewarded deep into stoppage time. In the 90+2nd minute, Taylor Wood rose to head home the equalizer, stunning the 17,066-strong crowd and ensuring the Stars left Oregon with a legitimate and hard-earned draw.
The result leaves Portland with a 11-6-7 record, while Chicago move to 5-2-17. The Thorns return to action at home against Orlando Pride on Saturday, September 19, while Chicago visit Washington Spirit on Sunday, September 20.
