Bayern Munich turned a goalless first half into a valuable away victory, beating Atlético Madrid 2–0 at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Tuesday. Lennart Karl opened the scoring in the 54th minute before Konrad Laimer doubled the advantage in the 74th, settling this UEFA Champions League league-phase fixture in the visitors’ favour.
Bayern find the breakthrough after the interval
Neither side managed a goal before half-time, leaving the contest finely poised at the break. Across the full match, however, Bayern carried the greater attacking threat, finishing with 58.6% possession and 19 attempts to Atlético’s nine.
The decisive shift came nine minutes into the second half. Karl’s 54th-minute opener broke the deadlock and left Atlético needing a response against opponents who were enjoying more of the ball.
Joshua Kimmich received a yellow card in the 56th minute, but Bayern’s advantage remained intact. With the hosts still searching for an equaliser, Laimer struck in the 74th minute to make it 2–0 and put a comeback further out of reach.
Atlético unable to find a way back
Atlético registered three attempts on target from their nine shots but could not turn any of them into a goal. Bayern, meanwhile, put five of their 19 efforts on target and made their second-half breakthroughs count.
The corner count finished level at four apiece, although the possession and shooting figures underlined Bayern’s stronger attacking output. Atlético committed 13 fouls to the visitors’ three, with Giuliano Simeone booked in the 79th minute. Bayern’s Josip Stanisic also received a yellow card in first-half stoppage time’s second-half equivalent, the 91st minute.
Three points and a clean sheet for Bayern
For Bayern, the reward was three league-phase points and a clean sheet on the road. A fixture still level at the interval was decided by two second-half goals, with Atlético unable to produce a reply.
Final result: Atlético Madrid 0–2 Bayern Munich. Goals: Lennart Karl (54′), Konrad Laimer (74′).
