Angel City FC delivered an emphatic home performance on Wednesday night, beating Seattle Reign FC 3-1 in the National Women’s Soccer League at BMO Stadium.
Ally Sentnor set the tone from the penalty spot in the 20th minute, converting to give Angel City an early advantage. The hosts carried that momentum through a competitive first half and doubled their lead five minutes before the interval when Ary Borges rose to head home in the 40th minute.
Seattle had slightly more of the possession, finishing with 51.2 percent, but Angel City were the more assertive side in the decisive moments. The hosts created a greater volume of chances, outshooting the Reign 14-8 and earning five corners to Seattle’s two.
The Reign attempted to find a route back after the break, but Angel City protected their two-goal cushion well. Maiara Niehues was booked in the 52nd minute, while Seattle’s Madison Curry, Sam Meza and Sally Menti also went into the referee’s book over the course of the match.
Angel City put the result beyond serious doubt in the 81st minute. Substitute Taylor Suarez found the net to make it 3-0, rewarding the home side’s efficiency in front of goal.
Seattle did have the final word in stoppage time, with Sofia Huerta scoring in the 90+2nd minute, but it proved only a consolation as Angel City saw out a deserved victory in front of 13,208 supporters.
The result moves Angel City’s record to 10-6-8, while Seattle Reign drop to 11-4-9. Angel City return to action against Utah Royals on Sunday, while Seattle host Denver Summit FC on Saturday.
