Issa Doumbia’s 59th-minute goal proved decisive as Sporting CP edged Shakhtar Donetsk 1–0 at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, November 3, claiming three points in the UEFA Champions League league phase.

Shakhtar finished with more possession, more attempts and more corners, but Sporting supplied the only goal of the evening and kept a clean sheet to secure a valuable away victory.

Doumbia breaks the deadlock

Neither side found a breakthrough before the interval, leaving the fixture level at 0–0 and both teams with everything to play for in the second half.

The decisive moment arrived in the 59th minute, when Doumbia put Sporting ahead. With no further goals, his contribution turned a potential draw into victory for the Portuguese side.

Shakhtar’s greater volume brings no reward

The final statistics underlined Shakhtar’s frustration. The designated hosts registered 54.4% possession and 14 attempts to Sporting’s 11, while also winning seven corners to the visitors’ two. Four of Shakhtar’s attempts were on target, compared with three for Sporting, but none produced an equaliser.

Sporting’s defensive work was therefore just as important as their breakthrough. They committed 18 fouls to Shakhtar’s 10, with Maxi Araújo booked in the 66th minute. Shakhtar’s Isaque received a yellow card in the 74th minute.

By the final whistle, Sporting had protected their slender advantage, leaving Shakhtar empty-handed despite their statistical edge.

Three points built on the decisive moment

This was a fixture settled by the difference between creating opportunities and making one count. Shakhtar had enough of the ball and enough attempts to seek a share of the points, but Sporting left with the win thanks to Doumbia’s 59th-minute intervention and a clean sheet behind it.
