Sporting Kansas City refused to let a two-goal deficit define their night, fighting back to earn a dramatic 3–3 draw with Portland Timbers at Sporting Park on Saturday, October 10. André Luiz struck twice, including the 72nd-minute equalizer, as the hosts rescued a point from an absorbing Major League Soccer fixture.

Portland led 2–0 before first-half stoppage time was over and restored their two-goal cushion midway through the second half. But Sporting answered with two goals in three minutes, turning a 3–1 deficit into a share of the spoils.

Portland take charge before a stoppage-time twist

David Da Costa opened the scoring for the Timbers in the 10th minute, putting the visitors ahead early. Vincent Janssen, booked in the 12th minute, then doubled Portland’s advantage from the penalty spot in the fourth minute of first-half stoppage time (45+4).

That looked like a commanding position heading into the interval, but Sporting found a crucial response. André Luiz pulled a goal back in the seventh minute of first-half stoppage time (45+7), ensuring the hosts went into the break trailing 2–1 rather than facing a two-goal mountain.

Sporting strike twice to salvage a point

Portland re-established their cushion when Ariel Lassiter made it 3–1 in the 64th minute. For the second time, Sporting needed to recover from two goals down.

The response was swift. Justin Reynolds reduced the deficit in the 70th minute, bringing Kansas City within one goal. Just two minutes later, André Luiz completed his brace in the 72nd minute to level the match at 3–3.

Neither side found a winner before the final whistle, leaving Sporting with a hard-earned draw and Portland reflecting on two separate two-goal leads that slipped away.

Six goals, contrasting routes to a draw

Portland finished with 54.4 percent possession, but Sporting produced more attempts, registering 12 shots to the visitors’ nine. Both sides put five efforts on target, while Kansas City held a 6–1 advantage in corners.

The defining contribution belonged to André Luiz, whose goals either side of halftime kept Sporting in contention and ultimately brought them level. Reynolds’ strike was equally important in the decisive second-half burst, while Portland’s three different scorers underlined their attacking threat—even if they could not protect their advantage.
