Red Bull New York delivered a devastating first-half burst to beat San Diego FC 4–1 at Sports Illustrated Stadium on Saturday, October 10. Three goals between the 15th and 27th minutes shaped this MLS fixture, leaving the visitors with a deficit they could not overturn.

Julian Hall opened the scoring in the 15th minute, Devin Padelford headed home in the 20th, and Jorge Ruvalcaba added a third in the 27th. Cédric Bakambu pulled one back for San Diego in the 60th minute, but Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting completed the victory in the third minute of second-half stoppage time (90+3′).

New York’s 12-minute burst takes control

Hall’s 15th-minute opener began the decisive passage of the match. Just five minutes later, Padelford’s header doubled the advantage, putting San Diego under mounting pressure before the first half had reached its midpoint.

Ruvalcaba then made it 3–0 in the 27th minute. With three different players finding the net in quick succession, New York had established a commanding lead that remained intact at the interval.

Bakambu offers hope, Choupo-Moting has the final word

San Diego found a route back into the contest through Bakambu’s 60th-minute goal, reducing the deficit to 3–1 with half an hour of regulation time remaining.

That response did not develop into a comeback. The visitors could not find another goal, and Choupo-Moting struck at 90+3′ to restore New York’s three-goal cushion and put an emphatic finishing touch on the result.

Possession tells only part of the story

San Diego held 63.1 percent of possession, but New York carried considerably more attacking threat. The hosts registered 28 shots to the visitors’ 14 and produced 12 attempts on target compared with San Diego’s five.

Those figures underline why New York’s 36.9 percent share of the ball was no obstacle to a convincing win. San Diego also led the corner count 7–4, yet neither their possession nor their set-piece volume translated into enough goals to repair the damage from that first-half spell.
