Coventry City made their finishing count to beat Sunderland 3-1 at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Saturday, October 31, turning four shots on target into three goals in a clinical Premier League victory.
Tatsuhiro Sakamoto opened the scoring in the 17th minute, Taiwo Awoniyi doubled the advantage in the 37th and Jack Rudoni added a third in the 52nd. Enzo Le Fée pulled one back from the penalty spot in the 67th minute, but Sunderland could not close the gap further and finished with 10 men following Omar Alderete’s late dismissal.
Coventry build a commanding lead
Victor Torp’s seventh-minute booking was an early disciplinary setback for the hosts, but Sakamoto’s 17th-minute opener gave Coventry the breakthrough in front of a crowd of 31,455.
Awoniyi then struck in the 37th minute to give the Sky Blues a 2-0 half-time cushion. Sunderland were left needing a substantial response after the interval, only for Rudoni’s 52nd-minute goal to push the fixture firmly in Coventry’s favour.
At three goals down, the visitors faced a formidable recovery task. Le Fée’s successful penalty in the 67th minute offered a route back, but it proved to be Sunderland’s only goal.
Finishing makes the difference
Sunderland had 56.6% possession and attempted 17 shots to Coventry’s 12, yet managed only two efforts on target. The hosts registered four on target and converted three, making the contrast in attacking efficiency decisive.
Both sides won four corners, but Sunderland’s greater share of the ball did not translate into enough threat to undo Coventry’s advantage. The home side had done the crucial damage before the visitors found their reply.
A difficult afternoon for Sunderland ended with further frustration when Alderete, booked in the fourth minute of stoppage time, was shown a red card in the ninth. Coventry saw out the closing moments to secure all three points.

Coventry next face Everton on Friday, November 6, with kick-off scheduled for 12:00 PM PST. Sunderland turn their attention to Chelsea on Sunday, November 8, at 6:00 AM PST.
