Kansas City Current survived a spirited Bay FC performance to earn a 2-1 NWSL victory at PayPal Park on Friday night, with Rocky Rodríguez delivering the decisive goal in the 89th minute.
The Current made a sharp start in San Jose and took the lead after 11 minutes through Izzy Rodriguez. The early breakthrough gave the visitors a foothold in a closely contested fixture, even as Bay FC steadily established control of the ball and pushed for a response.
Bay FC found their equaliser deep into first-half stoppage time. Karlie Lema struck in the 45+3rd minute to send the sides into the interval level at 1-1 and reward the home side’s growing pressure.
The hosts enjoyed 56.3% possession and created five shot assists, compared with Kansas City’s two, but neither side could create daylight for much of the second half. Bay FC finished with nine attempts to the Current’s eight, while both teams registered three shots on target.
Discipline became a factor in a physical contest. Kansas City’s Laney Rouse was booked in the 37th minute, while Bay FC’s Croix Bethune saw yellow in the 73rd minute. Lema, despite her first-half goal, was cautioned in the 67th minute, and Hannah Bebar joined her in the book in the 84th minute.
Just as the match appeared set to finish level, Kansas City found a late match-winner. Rocky Rodríguez struck in the 89th minute, turning a tense finish decisively in the Current’s favour and silencing much of the 10,569-strong crowd.
The result moves Kansas City Current’s league record to 11-4-8, while Bay FC drop to 6-4-12. Bay FC return to action against Seattle Reign FC on September 12, while Kansas City host Orlando Pride on September 11.
