Vancouver Whitecaps overcame an early red card to earn a hard-fought point at BMO Stadium, holding LAFC to a 1–1 draw in Saturday’s Major League Soccer fixture. Oliver Larraz put the visitors ahead in the 43rd minute, but Denis Bouanga’s header in the 46th minute brought LAFC level immediately after the interval.
The result rewarded Vancouver’s resilience after Tristan Blackmon was sent off in the sixth minute. For LAFC, an equalizer so early in the second half offered a platform to pursue victory, but the hosts could not turn their numerical advantage into a winning goal.
Vancouver strike despite early setback
Blackmon’s dismissal left the Whitecaps facing almost an entire match with 10 men. Yet Vancouver remained competitive and found the breakthrough shortly before halftime, with Larraz scoring in the 43rd minute to give the visitors a 1–0 lead at the break.
It was a significant response to their early setback: rather than simply reaching the interval on level terms, Vancouver went into the dressing room with an advantage to protect.
Bouanga answers straight after the restart
LAFC wasted little time restoring parity. Bouanga headed home in the 46th minute, wiping out Vancouver’s lead and leaving the hosts nearly the whole second half to search for another goal.
That winner never arrived. LAFC finished with 12 shots to Vancouver’s nine and held a narrow 4–3 edge in shots on target. The Whitecaps, meanwhile, recorded 52.2% possession despite their numerical disadvantage—an indication that their contribution extended beyond defending their own penalty area.
The closing stages brought further bookings, with Vancouver’s Édier Ocampo cautioned in the 76th minute, LAFC’s Ryan Hollingshead in the 89th and the visitors’ Mathías Laborda in the second minute of stoppage time. Neither side found a decisive breakthrough before the final whistle.
A point apiece, with contrasting perspectives
For Vancouver, taking a point away from home after losing Blackmon so early represented a resilient outcome. LAFC recovered from a halftime deficit, but will rue the opportunity to claim all three points against 10 opponents.
Both clubs return to MLS action on Wednesday, October 14. LAFC face Austin FC at 7:30 p.m. PDT, while Vancouver Whitecaps face St. Louis CITY SC at 5:30 p.m. PDT.
