New York City FC and Nashville SC played out a disciplined, scoreless Major League Soccer draw at Yankee Stadium on Friday night, as the visitors’ territorial edge could not be converted into the goal needed to separate the sides.
There were no goal scorers in the match. Nashville created the greater volume of attempts, finishing with 13 shots to NYCFC’s six and putting two efforts on target, while the home side registered one shot on target. The visitors also held 56.5 percent possession, but NYCFC stayed compact and limited Nashville’s attacking quality when it mattered.
The contest carried a physical edge from the opening stages. Nashville right back Andy Najar was booked in the 13th minute, before Patrick Yazbek saw yellow four minutes after the interval in the 49th. Hany Mukhtar was cautioned in the 53rd minute as NYCFC continued to frustrate Nashville’s attempts to establish a decisive rhythm in the final third.
NYCFC’s Kevin O’Toole was booked in the 68th minute, while substitute Malachi Jones received a yellow card in the 90th minute. Nashville substitute Bryan Acosta was also cautioned in the second minute of stoppage time, shortly before the final whistle confirmed a point apiece.
Neither side found the breakthrough, but the draw was a legitimate reflection of a tightly contested fixture: Nashville had more of the possession and shots, while NYCFC’s defensive work ensured the visitors could not turn that control into a winning goal.
New York City FC return to action on Wednesday, September 9, against the New England Revolution. Nashville SC are also back in MLS action that day, travelling to face Toronto FC.
