Gotham FC were closing in on three points until Taylor Suarez changed the ending. Her equalizer in the first minute of second-half stoppage time earned Angel City FC a 1–1 draw at Sports Illustrated Stadium on Sunday, October 4, canceling out Jaedyn Shaw’s 66th-minute opener.

The National Women’s Soccer League fixture drew 13,475 spectators to Harrison, New Jersey, where Gotham’s greater possession ultimately proved insufficient to secure victory.

Shaw breaks the deadlock

Neither side found a breakthrough before halftime, leaving the match goalless at the interval. Gotham eventually moved ahead through Shaw in the 66th minute, giving the hosts a lead they carried into stoppage time.

Across the full match, Gotham held 62.6% possession and won eight corners to Angel City’s none. Yet that territorial advantage did not translate into a steady supply of efforts on target: the hosts registered 10 shots, with Shaw’s goal their only attempt on target.

Suarez delivers a late response

Angel City offered a threat despite having less of the ball, finishing with 12 shots and five on target. Maiara Niehues received a yellow card in the 76th minute, but the visitors’ decisive moment came much later.

With Gotham still holding their narrow advantage, Suarez struck at 90+1 to bring Angel City level. The late goal ensured the visitors left New Jersey with a point, and the teams remained tied when the final whistle arrived after seven minutes of stoppage time.

Possession tells only part of the story

For Gotham, the frustration was clear: Shaw’s 66th-minute goal had put victory within reach, but they could not protect the lead through the closing stages. Angel City’s greater number of shots and efforts on target provided a counterweight to the hosts’ control of possession, with Suarez’s 90+1 equalizer the defining moment of a hard-earned draw.

Gotham’s next scheduled fixture is against Orlando Pride on Sunday, October 25, at 12:00 p.m. PDT. Angel City next face Boston Legacy FC on Sunday, November 1, at 2:00 p.m. PST.
