Philadelphia Union claimed a convincing 3-1 Major League Soccer victory over Red Bull New York at Red Bull Arena on Saturday, using sharp finishing and a more threatening attacking display to take the points in Harrison.
The Union struck first in the 20th minute through Milan Iloski, whose goal gave the visitors a 1-0 half-time lead. Red Bull New York had more of the ball, finishing with 58.4 percent possession, but Philadelphia posed the greater danger whenever they moved forward.
The visitors strengthened their grip on the match shortly after the interval. Cavan Sullivan made it 2-0 in the 50th minute, before Neil Pierre added Philadelphia’s third in the 64th minute. The Union’s attacking edge was clear in the numbers: they produced 19 shots, seven on target and 13 shot assists, compared with New York’s 11 shots and four efforts on target.
Red Bull New York found a late response when substitute Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scored in the 74th minute, reducing the deficit to 3-1. But the hosts could not manufacture the sustained pressure required for a genuine comeback, despite earning four corners and controlling territory for long spells.
Philadelphia also won seven corners and converted all three of their assists into goals, a decisive display of efficiency in a fixture where the visitors made their opportunities count. Ronald Donkor was booked for Red Bull New York in the 79th minute, while Philadelphia substitutes Augustin Anello and Quinn Sullivan received stoppage-time yellow cards.
The result gives Philadelphia Union a valuable road win, while Red Bull New York will look to respond when Seattle Sounders FC visit on September 5. Philadelphia’s next fixture is away to CF Montréal on the same day.
