Atlanta United FC built a three-goal advantage before seeing off Toronto FC 3–1 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday, November 1, in Major League Soccer. Miguel Almirón opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, Cooper Sanchez doubled the lead in the 40th, and Alexey Miranchuk added a third in the 51st before Lewis Morgan replied with a 79th-minute volley.
Almirón and Sanchez put Atlanta in command
Almirón delivered the breakthrough after 22 minutes, setting Atlanta on course for a productive afternoon at home. Toronto’s task became considerably harder five minutes before the interval when Sanchez made it 2–0 in the 40th minute.
That second goal gave the hosts a valuable cushion at half-time and left Toronto needing a substantial response after the restart.
Miranchuk extends the advantage
Instead, Atlanta struck again. Miranchuk’s 51st-minute goal stretched the lead to 3–0 just six minutes into the second half, putting the hosts firmly in control of the fixture.
The attacking numbers underlined Atlanta’s greater threat. Despite having 48.3% possession, they produced 20 shots to Toronto’s 13 and put eight efforts on target compared with the visitors’ three. Toronto enjoyed slightly more of the ball but could not turn that advantage into comparable penetration.
Morgan’s volley offers Toronto late consolation
Substitute Morgan gave Toronto something to take from the closing stages, finding the net with a volley in the 79th minute. It denied Atlanta a clean sheet and reduced the deficit to two goals, but there was no further breakthrough for the visitors.
Toronto also collected the match’s two yellow cards, with Dániel Sallói booked in the 33rd minute and Alonso Coello cautioned in the second minute of stoppage time. Both sides finished with three corners.
Ultimately, Atlanta’s decisive spell either side of half-time settled the contest. Three different goalscorers supplied the finishing touch, while Toronto were left to reflect on a possession advantage that yielded too little in front of goal.
