Angel City FC turned a level contest into an emphatic victory on Sunday, November 1, striking three times after halftime to defeat Boston Legacy FC 4–1 at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.
Nealy Martin opened the scoring in the 17th minute, but Amanda Gutierres brought Boston level in the 37th. With the sides tied 1–1 at the interval, the fixture remained finely balanced. Evelyn Shores’ 53rd-minute header changed that, before Sveindís Jónsdóttir in the 72nd minute and Claire Emslie in the 84th completed Angel City’s four-goal haul.
Boston answer Martin’s opener
Martin gave Angel City the breakthrough after 17 minutes, putting the hosts ahead in this National Women’s Soccer League encounter. Ary Borges then picked up a yellow card in the 19th minute.
Boston found their response through Gutierres, whose 37th-minute equalizer ensured the visitors reached halftime on level terms. Neither side had established a decisive advantage on the scoreboard, leaving plenty to settle after the restart.
Shores heads Angel City back in front
The pivotal goal arrived eight minutes into the second half. Shores headed Angel City into a 2–1 lead in the 53rd minute, restoring an advantage the hosts would not relinquish.
Jónsdóttir added a third in the 72nd minute to give Angel City breathing room. Substitute Emslie then supplied the final flourish in the 84th, completing a second half in which the hosts scored three unanswered goals.
Precision outweighs possession
Boston finished with 60.5 percent possession and a 19–14 advantage in total shots, but Angel City were far more effective at turning attempts into goals. The hosts put six efforts on target to Boston’s two, finding the net four times despite having just 39.5 percent of the ball.
The visitors also won five corners to Angel City’s two, yet their greater share of possession and shooting volume did not translate into a second goal. After an evenly poised first half, Angel City’s sharper attacking output made the difference.
Four different goalscorers underlined the breadth of the hosts’ contribution. Martin provided the opening, Shores delivered the decisive go-ahead header, and Jónsdóttir and Emslie ensured Angel City finished a competitive fixture as convincing winners.
