Atlanta United made their first-half authority count at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday, beating Sporting Kansas City 2-1 in Major League Soccer after surviving a late push from the visitors.
Tomás Jacob gave Atlanta the ideal opening in the 13th minute, finding the breakthrough to put the home side in front. Sporting Kansas City had slightly more of the ball across the match, finishing with 51.2 percent possession, but Atlanta were sharper in the decisive moments and doubled their advantage 11 minutes later.
Fafà Picault made it 2-0 in the 24th minute, capping a ruthless opening spell from Atlanta. The hosts went into half-time with a two-goal cushion despite being edged 8-7 on total shots over the 90 minutes.
Sporting Kansas City raised the pressure after the interval and earned six corners to Atlanta’s two, but initially struggled to turn that territorial edge into clear danger. Stephen Afrifa finally pulled one back in the 70th minute, giving the visitors a route into the closing stages.
Atlanta had to manage the final stretch carefully, with Luke Brennan booked in the 72nd minute and Elías Baez shown yellow in the 76th. Yet the home side protected their lead, limiting Sporting Kansas City to just one shot on target and seeing out a valuable 2-1 result.
Atlanta United next host Charlotte FC on Saturday, August 29, while Sporting Kansas City return home to face Vancouver Whitecaps the same day.
