Washington Spirit made their attacking edge count at Audi Field on Saturday, October 17, as Lucia Di Guglielmo’s 70th-minute goal secured a 1–0 victory over Gotham FC in the National Women’s Soccer League.
Gotham finished with 63% possession, but Washington offered the greater threat where it mattered. The Spirit outshot the visitors 13–5 and registered six efforts on target to Gotham’s two, earning three points despite spending much of the fixture without the ball.
Di Guglielmo breaks the deadlock
The sides reached halftime level at 0–0, leaving everything to play for after the interval. Gotham’s Jaelin Howell received a yellow card in the 61st minute before the decisive breakthrough arrived nine minutes later.
Di Guglielmo found the net in the 70th minute, giving Washington the lead and ultimately providing the only goal of the match. With neither side having broken through during the opening hour, her contribution proved the difference between a draw and a home victory.
Spirit turn fewer touches into greater threat
The final statistics underlined the contrast between possession and penetration. Washington had just 37% of the ball but produced more than twice as many attempts as Gotham and three times as many shots on target. The hosts also earned seven corners to the visitors’ four.
Gotham could not translate their greater share of possession into an equalizer. Washington preserved their clean sheet through the closing stages, with Taryn Torres booked for the visitors in the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time before the fixture ended 1–0.
For the Spirit, it was a victory built on making their attacking opportunities count and keeping Gotham’s threat limited. For the visitors, control of the ball brought no reward on the final result.
