In front of 52,626 spectators, the visitors found the decisive finish in a closely balanced fixture. Newcastle registered more attempts but struggled to turn them into genuine danger, finishing with just one shot on target from 16 efforts.

Manzambi makes the difference

The opening half brought four bookings before it produced a goal. Newcastle’s Joelinton and Sven Botman both went into the book in the 18th minute, followed by Villa’s João Gomes in the 25th and Alysson in the 28th.

The breakthrough arrived in the 36th minute, when Manzambi headed Villa in front. It was the only goal of the afternoon and gave the visitors an advantage they carried into the interval.

There was little to separate the sides in possession across the match, with Villa taking a narrow 50.7% share. Their greater accuracy in front of goal, however, proved decisive: three of their 15 attempts were on target, compared with Newcastle’s solitary effort on target.

Newcastle unable to find an equaliser

A goalless second half left Newcastle frustrated. Their overall tally of 16 attempts suggested attacking endeavour, but the lack of accuracy meant Villa’s one-goal lead remained intact through the final whistle at 90+7 minutes.

The hosts’ disciplinary tally also continued to grow. Nico González was booked in the 53rd minute and Yoane Wissa in the 55th, before William Osula in the 78th and Malick Thiaw in the 86th took Newcastle’s total to six yellow cards. Villa finished with two.

For the visitors, this was a valuable away win built around the afternoon’s defining finish and a clean sheet. For Newcastle, the clearest concern was their inability to make enough of their attempts count: they had the greater shot total, but no equaliser to show for it.
