Colorado Rapids had more of the ball and more attempts on target, but San Jose Earthquakes left Dick’s Sporting Goods Park with a point after a 1–1 MLS draw on Saturday, October 10. Donavan Phillip’s 27th-minute header put the hosts ahead before Dave Romney answered with a volley in the 57th minute.
Phillip gives Colorado the advantage
Phillip broke the deadlock with his header in the 27th minute, giving Colorado a lead they carried into halftime. The Rapids ultimately finished with 62.8 percent possession, underlining their greater share of the ball across the fixture.
The closing stages of the first half also brought bookings, with San Jose’s Jack Jasinski cautioned in the 44th minute and Colorado’s Loic Williams shown a yellow card in first-half stoppage time.
Romney delivers San Jose’s response
San Jose drew level 12 minutes after the restart. Romney’s volley in the 57th minute erased Colorado’s advantage and proved decisive in securing the visitors’ share of the points.
The Rapids’ attacking totals made the draw frustrating for the hosts: they registered 13 shots to San Jose’s nine and held a 10–3 advantage in attempts on target. Colorado also won six corners, twice the Earthquakes’ total, but could not find a second goal.
San Jose made their more limited possession count, recovering from a halftime deficit and keeping the result level through the final whistle. Neither side found a winner, leaving each with a point from this Western Conference fixture.
Midweek fixtures await
Both clubs return to MLS action on Wednesday, October 14. Colorado face Minnesota United FC, while San Jose take on Real Salt Lake, with both fixtures scheduled for 6:30 p.m. PDT.
