Manchester City 1-0 Coventry City

Erling Haaland’s first-half header proved the difference as Manchester City overcame a determined Coventry City side 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

With Premier League attention spread across a busy afternoon of fixtures, City made sure they handled their own business in Manchester, although Coventry ensured the hosts had to work hard for every inch of the pitch.

City controlled possession from the outset and eventually found the breakthrough in the 26th minute. Erling Haaland headed home in the 26th minute, converting the pressure into the only goal of a match in which Coventry defended with discipline and carried a threat of their own.

The visitors had already shown their combative intent, with Milan van Ewijk booked in the 19th minute, but they stayed compact after falling behind and prevented City from turning territorial dominance into a more comfortable margin.

Manchester City finished with 77.5 per cent possession and 15 attempts, placing four on target. Yet Coventry were far from passive: the visitors won five corners, more than City’s four, and registered 12 shots, including three on target. Their willingness to compete made the second half a tense affair despite City’s command of the ball.

Coventry continued to chase an equaliser after the interval, but City’s defensive structure held firm. Late bookings for Coventry’s Ethan Pinnock in the 90th minute plus two and City’s Abdukodir Khusanov in the 90th minute plus five reflected the intensity of a closing spell in which the home side protected their slender advantage.

The final whistle confirmed a third straight league victory for City, who move on to a major derby fixture against Manchester United on September 13. Coventry, still searching for their first point after three league matches, will look to respond when they face Brighton & Hove Albion next Sunday.
