New York City FC were closing in on three points at Citi Field before CF Montréal delivered a late twist. Daniel Ríos struck in the first minute of second-half stoppage time (90+1′) to secure a 1–1 draw on Saturday, October 31, cancelling out Andrés Perea’s 41st-minute opener in this Major League Soccer fixture.

The hosts had held their advantage throughout the second half, but could not turn a narrow statistical edge into a decisive second goal. Montréal stayed within reach and ultimately left New York with a point.

Perea gives NYCFC the halftime advantage

A first half punctuated by bookings found its breakthrough four minutes before the interval. Perea’s goal in the 41st minute put NYCFC ahead and sent the hosts into halftime with a 1–0 lead.

Kevin O’Toole had been cautioned for NYCFC in the 23rd minute, while Montréal’s Alexis Sánchez and Dani Pereira followed into the referee’s notebook in the 29th and 38th minutes respectively. Those interruptions were part of a fixture that finished with 36 fouls and eight yellow cards.

Montréal find a late answer

The lead remained intact as the second half unfolded. Olger Escobar was booked for Montréal in the 47th minute, followed by NYCFC’s Jonathan Shore in the 52nd and Talles Magno in the 55th. Further cautions for Montréal’s Viktor Radojevic and Fabian Herbers came in the 73rd and 90th minutes.

NYCFC finished with 52.8 percent possession and an 11–10 advantage in attempts, putting four shots on target to Montréal’s two. Those margins, however, never provided the cushion the hosts needed.

Ríos supplied the decisive response in the 91st minute, bringing Montréal level at 1–1. Neither side found a winner before the final whistle, leaving the visitors rewarded for staying in contention and NYCFC frustrated after leading for much of the contest.
