Chicago Fire FC came from behind and then weathered a Colorado response to beat the Rapids 4–2 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Saturday, October 31. Jonathan Bamba’s goals in the 41st and 56th minutes turned the fixture around before Robert Lewandowski struck in the 74th minute and Puso Dithejane sealed the victory in the 88th.
Colorado had taken the lead through Morgan Whittaker in the 22nd minute, while Paxten Aaronson’s 58th-minute equalizer briefly restored parity in an entertaining six-goal MLS encounter.
Bamba turns the tide
Whittaker gave the Rapids the opening breakthrough after 22 minutes, putting the hosts in front. Chicago answered before the interval, however, with Bamba finding the net in the 41st minute to send the teams into halftime level at 1–1.
Bamba struck again in the 56th minute, completing his brace and giving the Fire their first lead of the evening. Colorado’s response was immediate: Aaronson equalized in the 58th minute, leaving the contest finely balanced at 2–2 with more than half an hour remaining.
Chicago’s substitutes make the difference
A draw remained a possibility until Lewandowski restored Chicago’s advantage in the 74th minute. The substitute’s goal put the visitors ahead for the second time, and this time Colorado could not find an answer.
Fellow substitute Dithejane added Chicago’s fourth in the 88th minute, establishing a two-goal cushion and securing all three points for the visitors.
Fire make their chances count
The Rapids finished with 57.3 percent possession, but Chicago carried the greater threat on target. Both sides attempted 14 shots, with the Fire putting six on target to Colorado’s four. Chicago converted four of those six efforts on target, making their finishing the decisive difference.
For Colorado, an early lead and a swift second-half equalizer were not enough to secure a result. Chicago, meanwhile, combined Bamba’s two-goal contribution with crucial goals from the bench to take the victory.
The Rapids next face FC Dallas on Saturday, November 7, at 4:00 PM PST. Chicago return to action against Columbus Crew earlier that day, at 1:00 PM PST.
