Tottenham Hotspur made their numerical advantage count with a 2–0 Premier League victory over Crystal Palace at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday, October 31. Headers from Archie Gray in the 25th minute and Jan Paul van Hecke in the 73rd secured the points after Palace lost Jean-Philippe Mateta to a 13th-minute red card.
Mateta dismissal changes the contest
Palace faced an uphill task almost from the outset when Mateta was sent off with just 13 minutes played. Losing their centre-forward left the visitors short-handed for the vast majority of the fixture and deprived them of a key attacking outlet.
Gray went into the referee’s book two minutes later, but his next major contribution put Spurs ahead. The Tottenham defender headed home in the 25th minute to break the deadlock, giving the hosts a 1–0 advantage they carried into half-time.
Van Hecke provides the cushion
Palace remained within one goal as the second half unfolded, with Óscar Mingueza booked in the 53rd minute. Tottenham, however, finished the match with overwhelming statistical superiority: 79.4 per cent possession, 34 shots and nine efforts on target.
The second goal arrived in the 73rd minute when Van Hecke headed home to double Tottenham’s lead. Another aerial finish gave Spurs breathing room and left the visitors needing an unlikely two-goal recovery with 10 men.
The corner count underlined the balance of pressure, with Tottenham winning 19 to Palace’s none. Palace managed only two shots across the match, one on target, as Spurs combined their attacking volume with a clean sheet.
Three points secured, Leeds next
The early dismissal was the defining turning point, but Tottenham still had to turn their advantage into goals. Gray’s 25th-minute opener and Van Hecke’s 73rd-minute second supplied the decisive moments in a convincing home victory.
Tottenham next face Leeds United on Saturday, November 7, with kick-off scheduled for 4:30 a.m. PST. Crystal Palace return to action against Liverpool on Sunday, November 8, at 6:00 a.m. PST.
