Utah Royals survived an early exchange of goals and found a late winner through Mina Tanaka to beat Bay FC 3-2 in an entertaining National Women’s Soccer League fixture at America First Field on Friday night.
In front of 7,020 supporters in Sandy, Utah, the sides produced four goals inside the opening 29 minutes before Tanaka held her nerve from the penalty spot in the 79th minute to settle a finely balanced contest.
Fast start sets the tone
Bay FC struck first in the sixth minute through Karlie Lema, but Utah responded almost immediately. Miyabi Moriya levelled the match in the seventh minute, ensuring the visitors’ advantage lasted barely a minute.
The Royals then moved ahead in the 22nd minute when Narumi Miura found the net, rewarding the home side’s growing control. Utah finished with a narrow edge in possession, 51.4% to 48.6%, and created the more consistent threat with six shots on target from 11 attempts.
Bay FC refused to retreat, however, and Heather Gilchrist restored parity in the 29th minute with a header. The goal sent the match into the interval locked at 2-2 after a relentless first-half spell.
Tanaka delivers from the spot
The second half was tighter, with Utah pressing for a breakthrough while Bay FC looked capable of producing one of their own on the transition. The decisive moment arrived in the 79th minute, when Tanaka converted a penalty to put the Royals back in front.
Utah saw out the closing stages, including eight minutes of added time, to secure all three points. Bay FC registered 10 shots and four efforts on target but could not find a second equaliser.
The victory moves Utah Royals to an 11-3-6 record, while Bay FC leave Utah at 5-4-10 after another narrow defeat.
