Pedro Neto provided the decisive touch at either end of the second half as Chelsea secured a 2–0 Premier League victory over Everton at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday. His goals in the 46th and 90th minutes settled a fixture that had reached the interval goalless in front of 52,271 spectators.
Goalless opening half gives way to Neto breakthrough
Neither side found a breakthrough before half-time, with bookings punctuating the opening period. Everton’s Harrison Armstrong was cautioned in the 23rd minute, followed by Neto in the 27th and Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong in the 32nd. James Tarkowski and Morgan Rogers both entered the referee’s notebook in the 34th minute.
The deadlock lasted barely beyond the restart. Neto struck in the 46th minute, giving Chelsea the lead and leaving Everton with almost an entire half to find a response.
Chelsea’s greater threat tells
Chelsea finished with a substantial advantage in attempts, registering 18 shots to Everton’s six. Their possession advantage was narrower, at 52.7 per cent, while they also led the corner count seven to five.
Everton nevertheless put five of their six attempts on target, compared with Chelsea’s seven, showing that the hosts carried a threat despite producing fewer shooting opportunities. Crucially, they could not turn those efforts into an equaliser.
Cole Palmer received a yellow card in the 65th minute, and Everton substitute Christian Nørgaard was booked in the 89th as the contest approached its closing stages with just one goal separating the sides.
Neto then added his second in the 90th minute, putting Chelsea two goals clear and taking the fixture beyond Everton’s reach. After an extended period of stoppage time, the visitors departed with all three points and a clean sheet.
Neto makes the difference
The statistical balance favoured Chelsea, particularly in their volume of chances, but Neto supplied the goals that mattered. His early second-half opener changed the complexion of the afternoon; his late second removed the uncertainty of a slender lead.
Everton now turn their attention to a Premier League fixture against Arsenal on Saturday, October 24. Chelsea face Tottenham Hotspur on the same day, with a two-goal away victory providing an encouraging platform for that London encounter.
