Sporting Kansas City delivered an efficient away performance at Shell Energy Stadium on Saturday, defeating Houston Dynamo FC 2-0 in Major League Soccer.
André Luiz opened the scoring in the 27th minute, giving Sporting a lead they never relinquished. The visitors then landed a crucial second blow shortly before the interval, with Calvin Harris scoring in the 45th minute to send Sporting Kansas City into half-time 2-0 ahead.
Houston had plenty of the ball and created a substantial volume of attacking pressure, finishing with 51.4 percent possession, 21 shots and eight corners. But the Dynamo could not find a route through Sporting’s defensive shape, despite putting four efforts on target.
The hosts’ task became even steeper in first-half stoppage time when Héctor Herrera was sent off in the 45th minute. Down to 10 players and trailing by two goals, Houston pressed for a way back after the restart but could not turn their territorial edge into a breakthrough.
Sporting Kansas City managed the second half with discipline, limiting Houston to a goalless final 45 minutes and protecting their early work. The visitors made their 10 shots count far more effectively, with André Luiz’s 27th-minute finish and Harris’ 45th-minute goal proving decisive.
The defeat leaves Houston to regroup before hosting Minnesota United FC on October 10. Sporting Kansas City, meanwhile, take renewed momentum into their October 1 fixture against Seattle Sounders FC.
