Sporting CP made their chances count at Stade Bollaert-Delelis on Tuesday, October 13, securing a 2–0 UEFA Champions League league-phase victory over Lens. Luis Suárez opened the scoring in the 22nd minute before Issa Doumbia doubled the advantage in the 74th, leaving the hosts empty-handed despite their greater share of possession and shots.

Suárez gives Sporting the advantage

Suárez’s 22nd-minute goal provided the breakthrough and gave Sporting a lead they carried into half-time. For Lens, it established a familiar challenge for the remainder of the evening: finding a way back against opponents who ultimately proved more effective in front of goal.

The hosts finished with 55.9% possession and attempted 21 shots to Sporting’s 11. Yet only six of those Lens efforts were on target, compared with five for the visitors. The difference was not the volume of opportunities, but what each side made of them.

Doumbia delivers the decisive second

With Sporting still holding their narrow advantage, Lens midfielder Michaël Cuisance was booked in the 71st minute. Three minutes later, Doumbia struck to make it 2–0, significantly reducing the hosts’ hopes of rescuing a result.

Florian Thauvin received a yellow card in the 81st minute as Lens’ frustrating evening continued. The home side also finished ahead in corners, six to three, but neither that advantage nor their greater attacking volume produced a goal.

Efficiency settles the fixture

Sporting’s clean sheet and two goals told the decisive story. They left France with three valuable league-phase points after converting their opportunities, while Lens were left to reflect on a home defeat in which possession and pressure brought no reward.
