Philadelphia Union recovered from a first-half setback to claim a hard-earned 2-2 draw against Inter Miami CF in an absorbing Major League Soccer contest at Subaru Park on Wednesday night.
Indiana Vassilev gave the Union an early advantage in the 11th minute, but Inter Miami responded sharply through Dániel Pintér in the 21st minute before Lionel Messi put the visitors ahead five minutes later. Philadelphia kept pressing, however, and Neil Pierre powered home a 58th-minute header to level a match that finished amid late tension.
Fast start, rapid Miami response
The home side made the brighter opening and had their reward when Vassilev struck in the 11th minute. Philadelphia’s direct attacking approach caused problems early, and the opener gave the Subaru Park crowd the start it wanted.
Inter Miami gradually established more control of the ball, finishing with 57.1 percent possession, and their response arrived in the 21st minute when Pintér found the net. The visitors then completed the turnaround in the 26th minute as Messi scored to make it 2-1.
Miami took that advantage into the interval, but Philadelphia had created enough threat to suggest the contest was far from settled. The Union finished with 17 shots and six efforts on target, compared with Miami’s five shots and three on target.
Pierre delivers the equaliser
Philadelphia’s persistence paid off in the 58th minute. Pierre rose to head home and bring the Union level at 2-2, turning the second half into a tense battle between the hosts’ sustained pressure and Miami’s attempts to regain control.
The Union’s defensive resolve was tested in an extended finish, with the match running into 16 minutes of added time. Tempers flared in the 90th minute plus 13, when Philadelphia’s Cavan Sullivan and Inter Miami’s Yannick Bright were both shown red cards. Kai Wagner, Milan Iloski, Ezekiel Alladoh and Quinn Sullivan also went into the book for the Union, while Sergio Reguilón and Ian Fray were cautioned for Miami.
Neither side could find a decisive late goal, and the draw reflected a match in which Miami had more possession but Philadelphia generated the greater volume of chances.
