Austin FC completed a stirring late rescue at Q2 Stadium on Saturday night, fighting back from three goals down to claim a 3-3 draw against San Diego FC in Major League Soccer.
After a goalless first half, San Diego appeared to have seized total control of the Western Conference fixture. Aníbal Godoy opened the scoring in the 50th minute, Mikkel Desler’s own goal doubled the visitors’ advantage in the 57th minute, and Marcus Ingvartsen made it 3-0 in the 64th.
But Austin refused to fold in front of their home support. Brandon Vázquez began the comeback with a header in the 73rd minute, before Christian Ramírez turned the match on its head with two late goals. Ramírez headed home in the 82nd minute and then struck again in the 86th minute to level an extraordinary contest.
San Diego had enjoyed more of the ball, finishing with 58.7 percent possession and 15 total shots, but Austin were more clinical during their decisive late surge. The hosts registered six shots on target from 13 attempts and created enough pressure to transform a seemingly lost match into a valuable point.
The draw leaves Austin FC with a 7-10-10 record, while San Diego FC move to 8-8-11. Austin return to action against Nashville SC on October 10, while San Diego host Red Bull New York the same day.
