Philadelphia Union completed a breathtaking comeback from three goals down to defeat Sporting Kansas City 4-3 at Sporting Park on Saturday night. Sporting appeared to have the MLS fixture firmly under control after a dominant opening 16 minutes, but the Union tore the contest apart after the hour mark with four goals in nine extraordinary minutes.

André Luiz gave Sporting Kansas City a dream start in the fifth minute, then doubled the hosts’ advantage five minutes later as Philadelphia struggled to contain the early pressure. Wyatt Meyer made it 3-0 with a header in the 16th minute, leaving Sporting in command at half-time and seemingly on course for a comfortable home result.

But Philadelphia emerged with renewed urgency after the interval. Bruno Damiani began the revival in the 64th minute, and Cavan Sullivan struck two minutes later to transform the mood around Sporting Park. Milan Iloski then levelled the match in the 68th minute, completing a stunning three-goal burst.

The decisive moment arrived in the 73rd minute. Sporting substitute Zorhan Bassong turned the ball into his own net, handing Philadelphia a 4-3 lead and completing one of the league’s most dramatic turnarounds.

The Union controlled 55.4 percent of possession and registered eight shots on target from 10 attempts, compared with Sporting’s six on target from 10. Those fine margins became decisive after the break, when Philadelphia’s sharper attacking pressure overwhelmed a Kansas City side that had looked irresistible early on.

Sporting pushed for a late equaliser but could not find a way through, while Philadelphia managed the closing stages despite late yellow cards for Kai Wagner and Danley Jean Jacques. Bassong was also booked deep into stoppage time as a frantic match finally reached its conclusion.

The defeat leaves Sporting Kansas City with a painful lesson after surrendering such a commanding position. They return to action against Houston Dynamo FC on September 26. Philadelphia, winners of five straight matches, will look to carry their momentum into next Saturday’s fixture against Orlando City SC.
