Real Salt Lake did the damage early on Saturday afternoon in Sandy, racing to a two-goal first-half lead and seeing out a composed 2-0 victory over the Portland Timbers at America First Field.
The home side set the tone from the opening stages and were rewarded in the 10th minute when Zavier Gozo found the breakthrough. It was the ideal start for Real Salt Lake, who played with attacking intent and kept Portland pinned back for long stretches of the first half.
That pressure produced a second goal in the 28th minute, with Diego Luna doubling the advantage and giving Real Salt Lake full control of the fixture before the interval. By halftime, the hosts were firmly in command at 2-0, and Portland had given themselves a mountain to climb.
Real Salt Lake’s grip on the match was reflected in the numbers. The hosts edged possession at 52.7 percent, won the corner count 6-2, and peppered the Timbers goal with 25 total shots, including 15 on target. Portland, by contrast, managed 11 shots and just two efforts on target, never quite finding the attacking rhythm needed to mount a comeback.
The second half lacked the goals of the first, but it suited Real Salt Lake just fine. They stayed organized out of possession, limited Portland’s clear looks at goal, and controlled the tempo as the Timbers became increasingly frustrated. Portland’s discipline also began to fray, with Jimer Fory booked in the 60th minute and Ian Smith shown a yellow card in the 82nd, while Juan Manuel Sanabria went into the book for Real Salt Lake in the 85th.
For Real Salt Lake, this was an efficient and authoritative home performance built on sharp finishing and territorial control. For Portland, it was another difficult outing in which they were punished early and never fully recovered.
The win moves Real Salt Lake to 6-1-3 on the MLS season, while the Portland Timbers fall to 3-1-6. On this evidence, Real Salt Lake’s strong form looks well earned.
