Bay FC produced a remarkable late rescue in the National Women’s Soccer League on Wednesday night, with Taylor Huff striking in the fifth minute of stoppage time to secure a 2-2 draw against Denver Summit FC at Centennial Stadium.
Denver appeared on course to take all three points after goals from Lindsey Heaps in the 42nd minute and Janine Sonis in the 57th minute established a commanding advantage. But Bay found a route back through Claire Hutton’s 73rd-minute goal before Huff delivered the decisive late intervention.
The hosts had the better of the first half and made their pressure count shortly before the interval. Heaps broke the deadlock in the 42nd minute, sending Denver Summit FC into halftime with a deserved 1-0 lead.
Sonis doubled the home side’s advantage 12 minutes after the restart, seemingly placing Denver in full control of the fixture. Denver finished with 18 shots and put 10 on target, while also winning six corners, underlining the volume of their attacking work.
Bay FC, however, refused to fade. Hutton cut the deficit in the 73rd minute to shift the momentum and set up a tense closing spell. The visitors had recorded only five shots on target from 12 attempts, but their efficiency in the decisive moments proved invaluable.
With the match deep into added time, Huff found the equalizer in the 90’+5′ minute to complete Bay’s comeback and earn a hard-fought point. Huff had been booked in the 79th minute, but her late goal ensured Bay left Centennial with a result.
The draw leaves Denver Summit FC with an 8-8-8 record, while Bay FC move to 6-5-13. Denver next host Seattle Reign FC on Saturday, while Bay FC travel to face Racing Louisville FC on Sunday.
