Seattle had the ball and the attempts. Houston Dynamo FC had the decisive touch. Lucas Halter’s 26th-minute header secured a 1-0 victory over Seattle Sounders FC at Lumen Field on Wednesday, October 28, in a Major League Soccer fixture defined by the contrast between possession and end product.
The Sounders finished with 70.5% possession, 21 shots and 10 corners, yet could not find an equalizer. Houston produced just two attempts, with Halter’s winner their only effort on target—a remarkably efficient return for the visitors.
Halter delivers the decisive header
Halter broke the deadlock in the 26th minute, heading Houston into a lead they would carry through halftime and ultimately protect until the final whistle. It proved the only goal of the evening, leaving Seattle with an increasingly frustrating task despite their statistical superiority.
The numbers illustrated how differently the two sides reached the final whistle. Houston had only 29.5% possession and won a single corner, but made their one attempt on target count. Seattle registered five efforts on target without finding a way through.
Seattle unable to turn pressure into an equalizer
A goalless second half preserved Houston’s narrow advantage. Seattle’s volume of possession and attempts offered a route back toward a draw, but the finishing touch never arrived. Their 21-2 advantage in shots and 10-1 edge in corners ultimately yielded no reward.
Peter Kingston received a yellow card for Seattle in the 65th minute, while Houston’s Agustín Resch was booked in the 87th. The visitors kept their clean sheet intact through five minutes of second-half stoppage time to take all three points.
For Houston, this was a victory built on making a decisive opportunity count and protecting the advantage. For Seattle, it was a reminder that controlling the ball does not necessarily mean controlling the result.
