Seattle Reign FC found the breakthrough their control of the match deserved on Sunday, with Maddie Dahlien’s crisp 52nd-minute volley securing a 1-0 National Women’s Soccer League win over Houston Dash at Lumen Field.
The contest was level at 0-0 through a tightly contested first half, but Seattle steadily established command in front of an announced crowd of 7,878. The Reign finished with 56.4 percent possession, seven corners and a substantial 17-4 advantage in shots, keeping Houston under sustained pressure for long stretches.
Houston defended resolutely before the interval, although Kiki Van Zanten was booked in the 11th minute as the Dash worked to disrupt Seattle’s rhythm. The visitors remained in the fixture at the break, but their inability to retain the ball and build attacking momentum would become costly.
The decisive moment arrived seven minutes after the restart. Dahlien struck a volley in the 52nd minute to finally beat the Dash resistance and put Seattle 1-0 ahead. It was the only goal of the match, but it came amid a second-half display in which the Reign continued to dictate territory and create chances.
Seattle tested the target five times and registered 11 shot assists, compared with Houston’s one shot on target and three shot assists. The Dash battled to find a late response but could not turn their limited attacking opportunities into an equaliser. Miljana Ivanovic was shown a yellow card in the first minute of stoppage time, while Seattle substitute Brittany Ratcliffe was booked in the 90th-minute-plus-three.
The final whistle confirmed a valuable clean-sheet victory for Seattle, whose league record moves to 8-4-8. Houston leave Seattle with a 7-5-9 record after a match in which the visitors competed hard but could not match the Reign’s attacking volume.
Seattle Reign FC are next in action on Sunday, September 6, when they host San Diego Wave FC. Houston Dash return home the same day to face Orlando Pride.
