New York City FC looked set to collect all three points on Saturday night at Citi Field, only for St. Louis CITY SC to snatch a stoppage-time equalizer in a dramatic 1-1 Major League Soccer draw.
After a cagey first half finished goalless, Hannes Wolf broke the deadlock in the 50th minute to reward NYCFC’s growing control of the fixture. But just when the home side seemed to have done enough, Brendan McSorley rose to score with a header in the 90’+5′ minute, silencing the crowd and earning St. Louis a valuable point on the road.
The opening 45 minutes offered plenty of industry but no breakthrough. New York City FC saw more of the ball and finished the night with 58.6 percent possession, while also generating the sharper attacking volume with 16 total shots and seven efforts on target. St. Louis, though, stayed compact and competitive, making the home side work for every opening.
The visitors’ discipline was tested before the interval when Daniel Edelman went into the book in the 43rd minute. That first half edge carried into the restart, and NYCFC made it count five minutes after the break. Wolf found the decisive touch in the 50th minute, capping a move that finally gave the hosts the lead their pressure had threatened.
From there, the match became increasingly stretched. St. Louis picked up further yellow cards through Jaziel Orozco in the 56th minute and Dante Polvara in the 61st, while Wolf was also cautioned for NYCFC in the 58th minute. Even so, New York City FC continued to look the likelier side to find the next goal, finishing with 12 shot assists and limiting St. Louis to three shots on target for most of the night.
But MLS fixtures can turn in an instant, and this one did deep into added time. With the clock ticking into the 90’+5′ minute, McSorley delivered the late twist, meeting the chance with a header to make it 1-1 and punish NYCFC for not putting the contest away earlier.
It was a cruel ending for the home side, who had controlled long stretches and seemed on course for victory after Wolf’s 50th-minute strike. Instead, they were left to settle for a draw that felt far more like two points dropped. For St. Louis CITY SC, meanwhile, McSorley’s late intervention could yet prove a momentum-shifting moment, rescuing a result from a difficult away fixture.
Goal scorers: Hannes Wolf 50′ (New York City FC), Brendan McSorley 90’+5′ (St. Louis CITY SC).
