Antoine Griezmann delivered the decisive quality as Orlando City SC claimed a dramatic 3-2 Major League Soccer victory over Atlanta United FC at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Wednesday night.

In an unusual five-goal contest, Atlanta’s two goals both came via Orlando own goals, while Griezmann struck in the 26th and 77th minutes and Iván Angulo added another in the 58th minute to secure all three points for the visitors.

Early own goal gives Atlanta a lift

Atlanta made the ideal start when Orlando defender David Brekalo turned the ball into his own net in the 7th minute. The hosts had an early advantage and pushed for control in front of their home support, earning seven corners across the match.

Orlando, though, settled into possession and gradually imposed their rhythm. The visitors finished with 59.5 percent of the ball and were far more clinical in the decisive areas, placing seven of their 14 attempts on target.

Griezmann levelled the match in the 26th minute, bringing Orlando back onto terms before the interval. The sides went into half-time level at 1-1, with the fixture still finely balanced.

Orlando seize control after the break

Orlando emerged with greater authority in the second half. Angulo put the visitors ahead in the 58th minute, and the away side looked increasingly composed as Atlanta struggled to turn its 15 shots into clear-cut finishing opportunities. Only two Atlanta attempts hit the target.

Griezmann then produced what proved to be the winning goal in the 77th minute, completing his brace and giving Orlando a 3-1 cushion. His two-goal display was the defining attacking contribution of the night.

Late twist, but Orlando hold on

There was one final swing in the 97th minute when substitute Tyrese Spicer scored an own goal to reduce Atlanta’s deficit. The late misfortune created a nervy finish for Orlando, but the visitors saw out the remaining moments to take a valuable 3-2 win.

The result leaves Atlanta United FC to regroup quickly before hosting D.C. United on Saturday. Orlando City SC will look to build on an accomplished away performance when it travels to face Toronto FC on the same day.
