Inter Miami CF and Atlanta United FC played out a compelling 2-2 Major League Soccer draw at Nu Stadium on Saturday, with Breel Embolo’s late penalty denying the hosts victory after a breathless first half.
Miami struck first in the 32nd minute when Casemiro rose to head home, giving the home side a deserved breakthrough. Atlanta responded quickly, however, as Miguel Almirón levelled the match in the 35th minute to ensure the contest remained finely balanced.
The hosts regained control just before the interval. Luis Suárez found the net in first-half stoppage time, scoring in the 45th minute plus one to send Inter Miami into the break with a 2-1 advantage.
Atlanta carried a greater threat after the restart, finishing with 15 shots and five on target compared with Miami’s 11 attempts and three on target. Possession was split evenly at 50 percent apiece, while both sides earned six corners in an open, physical match.
Miami appeared set to see out the three points, but Atlanta found their decisive moment in the 87th minute. Embolo converted from the penalty spot to make it 2-2 and secure a valuable draw for the visitors.
The point leaves Inter Miami’s overall record at 12-7-4, while Atlanta move to 6-4-13. Miami return to action against Chicago Fire FC on Wednesday, while Atlanta face Orlando City SC in their next fixture.
