Brighton & Hove Albion 3-0 Arsenal
Arsenal’s perfect opening to their Premier League title defence came to an abrupt and emphatic end at the American Express Stadium, where Brighton & Hove Albion produced a clinical 3-0 victory in front of 31,944 supporters.
Mikel Arteta’s side had plenty of the ball, finishing with 59.7 per cent possession and six corners, but Brighton were sharper in both penalty areas and far more decisive when the key moments arrived. The hosts registered 17 shots, five on target, and made their superiority count with three well-timed goals.
Pascal Gross broke the deadlock in the 31st minute, giving Brighton the reward their purposeful start deserved. Arsenal struggled to turn their territorial control into clear openings, managing only two efforts on target across the match, and their frustration deepened just before the interval.
Charalambos Kostoulas struck in the 45th minute to send Brighton into half-time with a commanding 2-0 lead. The Seagulls had defended with discipline, pressed intelligently and punished Arsenal’s lack of cutting edge.
There was no sustained response after the restart. Chema Andrés sealed a memorable home win in the 57th minute, rising to score with a header and put the result beyond doubt. Brighton then managed the closing stages with authority, despite a late booking for Declan Rice as Arsenal’s difficult afternoon drew to a close.
The result moves Brighton to a 3-1-1 league record and provides a major statement before their next fixture against Sunderland on October 10. Arsenal, now 4-0-1, will have time during the international break to regroup before travelling to Leeds United on the same day.
For Brighton, this was a complete performance: compact without the ball, dangerous in transition and ruthless in front of goal. For Arsenal, the first defeat of the campaign was a sobering reminder that possession alone does not win Premier League matches.
