Toronto FC 1-1 New York City FC — Toronto FC fought back in the second half to claim a 1-1 draw with New York City FC at BMO Field on Saturday, with Dániel Sallói’s 70th-minute finish cancelling out Nicolás Fernández’s first-half opener.
New York City FC took control of the contest for long spells and made their possession advantage count before the interval. Nicolás Fernández put the visitors ahead in the 29th minute, giving NYCFC a 1-0 lead they carried into half-time.
Toronto, however, remained a threat despite seeing less of the ball. The hosts created the more sustained volume of opportunities, finishing the match with 14 shots, six on target and seven corners. Their persistence was rewarded in the 70th minute when Sallói found the equaliser to bring BMO Field back to life.
The fixture had a combative edge throughout. Toronto FC’s Benjamín Kuscevic was booked in the 18th minute, while Fernández saw yellow after his goal in the 40th. Andrés Perea was cautioned for NYCFC in the 54th minute, followed by Toronto bookings for Djordje Mihailovic in the 59th and Matheus Pereira in the 64th. NYCFC substitute Jonathan Shore was also booked in stoppage time.
Neither side could find a late winner across eight minutes of added time, but Toronto can take encouragement from their response and attacking output. NYCFC finished with 59.4 per cent possession but managed only six shots and two efforts on target, while Toronto made their 40.6 per cent share of the ball count with a more direct, purposeful display.
The point extends Toronto FC’s unbeaten run to five matches, while New York City FC halt a three-match losing sequence. Toronto return to MLS action at home to Chicago Fire FC on September 5, while NYCFC travel to face Nashville SC on September 4.
