San Diego Wave FC and Denver Summit FC played out a competitive 1-1 draw at Snapdragon Stadium on Friday night, with Melanie Barcenas and Yazmeen Ryan trading goals in a fixture that remained finely balanced until the final whistle.
Backed by a crowd of 13,463 in San Diego, the Wave made their first-half control count in the 35th minute. Melanie Barcenas struck in the 35th minute to give the hosts a 1-0 interval lead after they had enjoyed more of the ball and created the clearer early openings.
San Diego finished with 54.7 percent possession, four corners and five shots on target from seven attempts. But Denver stayed composed, carried a greater shot volume across the match, and found their equaliser after the break.
Yazmeen Ryan headed Denver level in the 58th minute, converting the visitors’ pressure into a crucial goal. Denver registered 11 shots and six shot assists, and although only two of their efforts were on target, Ryan’s finish ensured the visitors had a tangible reward for their attacking intent.
The closing stages were tense rather than open. San Diego’s Laila Harbert was booked in the 79th minute, while Adriana Leon saw yellow in first-half stoppage time. Denver substitute Emma Regan was also cautioned late on, but neither side could manufacture a decisive second goal.
The draw reflected a match in which San Diego had the stronger possession and accuracy in front of goal, while Denver supplied persistent attacking pressure and a second-half response. Barcenas’ first-half finish and Ryan’s headed equaliser left the points shared in the NWSL.
