Gotham FC came from behind to earn a 2-1 National Women’s Soccer League victory over Kansas City Current on Friday night at Red Bull Arena, with Midge Purce and Sam Kerr turning an explosive first half in the hosts’ favour.
Kansas City made a dream start when Amelia White found the net in the 1st minute, immediately putting Gotham under pressure in Harrison. But the home side responded with composure, took control of the ball and steadily pushed the Current deeper into their own half.
Purce delivered Gotham’s equaliser in the 13th minute, restoring parity after the early setback. The goal shifted the rhythm of the match, as Gotham began to dictate possession and create the more frequent openings.
The decisive moment arrived in the 41st minute. Sam Kerr scored to give Gotham a 2-1 lead before the interval, capping a first half that contained all three goals and sending the hosts into the break with momentum.
Gotham controlled 63.7% of possession across the match and backed that territorial advantage with 17 shots, including 10 on target. Kansas City produced six attempts and put three on target, but could not find a second-half breakthrough despite remaining within one goal throughout the closing stages.
There were no goals after the restart, although Gotham continued to apply pressure through set pieces, winning seven corners to Kansas City’s three. The Current committed nine fouls, while Gotham committed six; Elizabeth Ball was shown a yellow card in the 33rd minute.
The result moves Gotham FC’s record to 13-4-3, while Kansas City Current drop to 9-3-8. In front of 9,622 spectators, Gotham showed the resilience to recover from an early blow and the control to see out a valuable NWSL home victory.
