Wolverhampton Wanderers were held to a 1-1 draw by Sunderland at Molineux on Saturday, with the home side forced to come from behind despite playing more than an hour against 10 men.
Sunderland struck first on 17 minutes when Nordi Mukiele (17′) rose to head home and silence the home support, giving the visitors an early platform in a fixture they approached with real discipline.
The match turned seven minutes later when Sunderland were reduced to 10 men after Danny Ballard was shown a straight red card on 24 minutes. From that point, Wolves dominated territory and possession, pinning Sunderland back for long stretches and asking constant questions of the visiting back line.
Even so, the Black Cats dug in impressively until Wolves found their breakthrough early in the second half. Defender Santiago Bueno (54′) levelled the match with a header, rewarding the hosts’ pressure and setting up what looked like a likely push for a winner.
Wolves finished with 57.6 percent possession, 20 shots, 7 efforts on target and 6 corners, underlining how much of the contest they controlled after the dismissal. Sunderland, though, remained dangerous in moments and made their limited openings count efficiently, registering 10 shots and 2 on target across the afternoon.
There was no shortage of edge as the contest wore on. Brian Brobbey was booked for Sunderland in first-half stoppage time, while Granit Xhaka, Dennis Cirkin and goalkeeper Robin Roefs all went into the referee’s notebook as tensions rose in the closing stages.
But for all of Wolves’ pressure, Sunderland’s resistance held firm through to full time. The home side had the initiative, the extra man and the better chances, yet could not find the decisive second goal. For Sunderland, this was a hard-earned away draw built on resilience after Ballard’s red card changed the shape of the afternoon.
In the end, both sides took a point from a fixture that swung sharply after the first quarter. Wolves will feel they left more on the pitch, while Sunderland can be satisfied with a determined Premier League result away from home after spending so long undermanned.
