Portland Thorns FC left it late, but Sophia Wilson’s 90’+1 penalty earned a 2-2 draw with Utah Royals in an entertaining National Women’s Soccer League fixture at Providence Park on Saturday afternoon.

In front of 20,053 supporters in Portland, the Thorns looked set to be punished after Utah responded brilliantly to falling behind, with Kiana Palacios equalising on 44′ before Cloé Lacasse fired the visitors in front on 50′. But just as the Royals seemed poised to take all three points, Wilson held her nerve from the spot deep into stoppage time to ensure the hosts claimed a share of the spoils.

Portland struck first on 21′ through Olivia Moultrie, who gave the home side an early foothold in the match. It was a bright opening from the Thorns, who generated dangerous moments despite seeing less of the ball overall, and Moultrie’s finish rewarded their early intent.

Utah, though, steadily grew into the contest. The visitors enjoyed 54.1 percent possession, produced 23 total shots to Portland’s 13, and carried a consistent threat in the final third. Their pressure paid off just before the break when Palacios found the net with a header on 44′, sending the Royals into halftime level at 1-1 and with momentum on their side.

That momentum carried straight into the second half. After Mina Tanaka was shown a yellow card on 48′, Utah quickly refocused and took the lead on 50′ when Lacasse struck to complete the turnaround. Suddenly, the Thorns were chasing the match, while the Royals looked increasingly comfortable in transition and dangerous whenever they advanced into wide areas.

The second half had its edge as well as its quality. Ana Tejada went into the book for Utah on 52′, Portland’s Cassandra Bogere followed with a yellow card on 61′, and Dayana Pierre-Louis was cautioned for the visitors on 68′. Lacasse also saw yellow at 90’+2′ in the tense closing moments as the match became stretched and frantic.

For long spells, Utah looked the more likely side to find the decisive third goal. The Royals put eight efforts on target and showed composure after conceding first, while Portland had to remain patient and trust that one final opening would arrive. It did, dramatically, in stoppage time.

Wilson stepped up on 90’+1 and converted from the penalty spot to make it 2-2, sparking relief around Providence Park and denying Utah what would have been an impressive away victory. It was a poacher’s ending to a match that had tilted in different directions, and it underlined Portland’s resilience even on a day when they were second-best statistically for stretches.

In the end, a draw felt hard-earned for both sides. Portland showed character to come back at the death, while Utah could take real encouragement from a strong road performance in which they controlled significant stretches and created the greater volume of chances.

Scorers: Olivia Moultrie 21′, Kiana Palacios 44′, Cloé Lacasse 50′, Sophia Wilson 90’+1 (pen).
