Angel City FC and Gotham FC played out a competitive, scoreless National Women’s Soccer League draw at BMO Stadium on Sunday night, as a crowd of 15,860 watched two resolute defensive displays deny a late breakthrough.
There were no goal scorers in Los Angeles, but the fixture was far from short on attacking intent. Angel City generated 16 shots and earned seven corners despite having only 39 percent of possession, repeatedly looking to turn pressure in wide areas into a decisive opening. Gotham controlled more of the ball with 61 percent possession and put four efforts on target, one more than the hosts’ three.
The visitors’ ability to circulate possession gave them periods of control, while Angel City remained dangerous in transition and through set pieces. Neither side, however, could supply the final touch required to separate two teams that remained disciplined when defending their penalty areas.
The contest grew increasingly physical around the interval. Angel City forward Prisca Chilufya was booked in first-half stoppage time at 45+5, before Gotham’s Jaedyn Shaw saw yellow in the 59th minute. Angel City’s Ary Borges was cautioned in the 67th minute, and Gotham’s Jordynn Dudley was booked at 90+5 as the visitors saw out the final moments.
For Gotham, the point extends an impressive run of form and maintains momentum during a period in which the club has also been managing change off the pitch following González’s departure for Al Qadsiah. Angel City, meanwhile, will take encouragement from an energetic performance that produced more shots and more corners than their visitors, even if the finishing touch proved elusive.
The draw leaves Angel City with a 7-5-7 record, while Gotham move to 13-5-3. Angel City return to action quickly on Wednesday, August 26, against North Carolina Courage, while Gotham’s next fixture is away to Portland Thorns FC on Friday, August 28.
