Kansas City Current found the breakthrough they needed in the second half, beating Boston Legacy FC 1-0 on Saturday at CPKC Stadium in National Women’s Soccer League action. After a cagey opening 45 minutes ended without a goal, Temwa Chawinga delivered the decisive moment on 69 minutes to hand the hosts all three points.
This was not a stroll for Kansas City. Boston Legacy FC saw more of the ball, finishing with 56.2 percent possession, and also edged the corner count 5-3. But the Current were sharper in the key moments, putting four shots on target from 11 attempts and doing enough defensively to protect their slim advantage through a lengthy spell of stoppage time.
The first half was short on cutting edge but not without tension. Kansas City looked to use quick transitions and direct attacking runs, while Boston tried to establish control through longer spells of possession. Neither side could find a final pass clean enough to unlock the match before the interval, and the teams went into the dressing rooms with the fixture still level at 0-0.
The decisive passage arrived in the 69th minute. Temwa Chawinga, a constant threat whenever Kansas City could spring forward, struck the only goal of the match to break the deadlock and lift the home crowd. It was a finish that suited the flow of the contest: one sharp attacking moment in a fixture where margins were tight and chances had to be taken.
From there, the Current shifted focus toward game management without completely abandoning the counterattack. Boston pushed for an equalizer and finished with 12 total shots, but Kansas City’s defensive shape held firm. The visitors’ frustration showed late on as Annie Karich was booked in the 84th minute before Bárbara Olivieri also went into the referee’s book in stoppage time at 90+2′.
By full time, Kansas City had done what strong sides often do in close fixtures: absorb pressure, seize a decisive opening, and see out the result. The Current improved to 7-0-5, while Boston Legacy FC were left to reflect on a performance with plenty of possession but no reward, dropping to 2-3-7.
In the end, Chawinga’s 69th-minute goal was all that separated the sides, and it was enough to make this another valuable night for Kansas City in front of their home support.
