Real Salt Lake turned a cagey first half into a commanding Major League Soccer victory on Wednesday night, defeating Houston Dynamo FC 3-0 at America First Field in Sandy, Utah.

After a goalless opening 45 minutes, the hosts found their breakthrough almost immediately after the restart and never looked back. The result lifted Real Salt Lake to 7-1-4 on the season, while Houston Dynamo FC slipped to 6-0-6.

Second-half surge settles the fixture

The first half offered plenty of effort but little cutting edge in front of goal. Houston actually finished the night with more total shots, 15 to Real Salt Lake’s 9, and put 4 efforts on target to the home side’s 2. But Real Salt Lake were clinical when the key moments arrived, and their defensive shape ensured Houston’s pressure rarely translated into genuine momentum.

The breakthrough came in the 49th minute, and it arrived in unfortunate fashion for the visitors. Duane Holmes turned the ball into his own net at 49′, handing Real Salt Lake a 1-0 advantage and shifting the tenor of the match almost instantly.

With the lead in hand, Real Salt Lake began to attack with greater conviction, and Zavier Gozo took over. The forward doubled the advantage in the 57th minute, finishing off a flowing move to put the hosts firmly in control at 2-0.

Gozo was not done there. In the 64th minute, he struck again to complete his brace, capping a devastating 15-minute stretch from Real Salt Lake and effectively ending Houston’s hopes of a comeback. His goals at 57′ and 64′ gave the scoreline the emphatic look the second half deserved.

Houston unable to convert pressure

There were flashes from Houston Dynamo FC, particularly in terms of shot volume and chance creation. The visitors recorded 14 shot assists and edged stretches of possession, though only narrowly, finishing with 47.2 percent of the ball compared to Real Salt Lake’s 52.8 percent. They also forced more attempts overall, but they lacked the final pass and finishing touch needed to trouble the home side on the scoreboard.

Real Salt Lake, by contrast, were efficient and organized. They won the corner count 4-1, limited Houston’s openings in decisive areas, and punished mistakes ruthlessly after the interval. Once they moved two goals ahead, the hosts managed the tempo well and saw out the fixture with maturity.

Houston’s frustrations were also visible late in the first half when Agustín Bouzat was shown a yellow card in stoppage time at 45’+4′. It was one of several moments that hinted at a difficult night for the visitors, even before the second-half collapse.

Standout performers and key moments

Gozo will take the headlines after his two-goal display, with strikes at 57′ and 64′ providing the cutting edge that separated the teams. While the opener went down as an own goal by Holmes at 49′, Real Salt Lake still deserved credit for forcing the issue and capitalizing on the pressure they built coming out of the break.

From there, the home side looked every bit a team comfortable on its own pitch. Backed by a strong spell after halftime, Real Salt Lake transformed a balanced contest into a one-sided finish and sent supporters home from America First Field with a convincing result.
