Mimi Van Zanten struck in the ninth minute to give San Diego Wave FC a 1-0 victory over Bay FC at PayPal Park on Sunday, November 1. In front of 15,927 spectators, the visitors made their early breakthrough count and kept Bay off the scoresheet to secure all three points in the National Women’s Soccer League.
Early breakthrough sets the terms
Van Zanten’s ninth-minute goal put San Diego ahead before the fixture had reached its stride. It would prove the only goal of the afternoon, with the Wave carrying that slender advantage into half-time.
San Diego finished with 56.5 percent possession and a 12-9 advantage in total attempts. Their seven corners to Bay’s one also reflected the visitors’ greater share of attacking territory, although they registered only two shots on target.
Bay cannot find the equaliser
The hosts offered a threat of their own, putting four of their nine attempts on target—twice San Diego’s total—but could not turn that accuracy into a goal. With just one goal separating the sides, an equaliser would have been enough to earn Bay a draw; instead, the Wave preserved their lead throughout a goalless second half.
The contrast between the attacking numbers told the story of a narrow contest: San Diego had more of the ball and more attempts, while Bay tested the target more often. The decisive difference remained Van Zanten’s ninth-minute finish.
Wave leave with the points and a clean sheet
At the final whistle, San Diego had paired an early attacking breakthrough with a clean sheet away from home. Bay were left with frustration on their own pitch, unable to find the goal that would have changed the result.
